Run Fluxer on your own server
Most chat apps run on a server owned by a company. With self-hosting, that server is yours. Fluxer staff cannot access your data or restrict it in any way.
What is self-hosting?
When you use a typical chat app, it is owned and operated by a single centralized company. That company decides how you are allowed to communicate on its service and what it can do with the data you share. It also reserves the right to change or restrict features at any time. Its incentives are rarely aligned with yours.
Run your own copy
Now imagine your favorite chat app were fully open source, with no restrictions, and you could run your own copy, where you set the rules and have complete control over your data. That is what Fluxer gives you. We are not funded by venture capital, but by users who choose to support us through Plutonium, donations, and soon the Operator Pass.
What it takes
Self-hosting is not free of effort, though. You will need to keep your software updated and handle server administration yourself. Fortunately, there are plenty of guides online, we are steadily improving our documentation, and the Operator Pass is on the way.
Clearing things up
Fluxer's goal is to make self-hosting accessible to everyone. There are a lot of misconceptions online about how self-hosting works on Fluxer, so to clear them up once and for all, your self-hosted Fluxer instance does not phone home, it does not depend on a centralized login system, and Fluxer staff cannot ban you from your own instance or from anyone else's that we do not run.
Why it is worth doing
On centralized services, it is increasingly hard to trust that you will keep access to your friends, family, and communities, and just as hard to know what your data is being used for behind the scenes. Fluxer offers a way to sidestep all of that. You are responsible for your own data, you decide what happens to it, and no one else can take it away from you.
The Operator Pass
Fluxer is free to run, and the Operator Pass will not change that.
You will not be paying for software, you will be paying for access to the people who build it. A one-time $199 will get you the #operators channel in Fluxer Labs, a direct line to the team for help and feedback, and the first look at unreleased branches and feature flags.
